Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, des "compagnies de la mort" ont été créées dans l'armée italienne pour mener des opérations d'assaut. Ils étaient tenus par des volontaires et, selon leur objectif, ils devaient ouvrir la voie aux unités d'infanterie attaquantes. Leur tâche principale était de dégager les passages dans les barrières ennemies, pour lesquelles les combattants de ces compagnies étaient équipés d'une armure d'assaut spéciale.
Dès le début de la guerre, l'état-major italien a porté une attention particulière à ce type de protection blindée individuelle. L'équipement des unités d'assaut comprenait des casques d'assaut spéciaux, des boucliers et des cuirassiers (le plus célèbre était la cuirasse Farina). Selon certaines sources, ces unités existaient jusqu'en 1916.

During the WWI so-called "death companies" were created in the Italian army to carry out assault operations. They were manned by volunteers, and according to their purpose were to pave the way for the attacking infantry units. Their primary task was to clear the passages in the enemy's barriers, for which the fighters of these companies were equipped with special assault armor.
From the very beginning of the war, the Italian General Staff paid special attention to this type of individual armor protection. The equipment of the assault units included special assault helmets, shields and cuirassiers (the most famous was the Farina cuirass). According to some sources, these units existed until 1916.
