Alors que la Grande-Bretagne cherchait à riposter au début de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le Vickers Wellington était sans doute leur avion le plus important et ils devaient assurer un approvisionnement constant de nouvelles machines. Dans le but d'introduire une certaine flexibilité dans les options de moteur et de fournir au Wellington une plus grande puissance, environ 400 Mk.II Wellington ont été modifiés pour prendre les moteurs Rolls Royce Merlin X, une évolution qui a donné à ce célèbre bombardier une apparence très différente.

As Britain looked to strike back at the start of WWII, the Vickers Wellington was arguably their most important aircraft and they needed to ensure a constant supply of new machines. In an attempt to introduce some engine option flexibility and to provide the Wellington with greater power, around 400 Mk.II Wellington’s were modified to take Rolls Royce Merlin X engines, a development which gave this famous bomber a very different appearance.
