Le puissant Sd.Kfz. 186 "Jagdtiger" a été construit sur la coque allongée du char lourd Tiger II dans les dernières étapes de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. À l'intérieur de sa puissante casemate se trouvait le canon de 128 mm PaK 44, armé d'obus capables de percer le blindage de tous les chars ennemis adverses. Ce « buster de chars » automoteur a été déployé de manière efficace et meurtrière même contre les chars lourds soviétiques les plus récemment introduits, tels que l'IS-2. Le Jagdtiger avait un poids énorme de près de 76 tonnes. Le gros canon et le blindage lourd, bien qu'efficaces, ne pouvaient pas contrebalancer la faible maniabilité et les faibles vitesses du véhicule au combat. Le poids important affectait sa fiabilité et les volumes de production étaient également limités. Cependant, le Jagdtiger, pour sa seule capacité offensive, se classe comme le point culminant de la production allemande de chasseurs de chars automoteurs pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.

The powerful Sd.Kfz. 186 “Jagdtiger” was built onto the elongated hull of the Tiger II heavy tank in the latter stages of the Second World War. Inside its mighty casemate was the 128 mm PaK 44 cannon, armed with shells that could pierce the armour of all opposing enemy tanks. This self-propelled ‘tank buster’ was deployed effectively and lethally against even the most recently introduced Soviet heavy tanks such as the IS-2. The Jagdtiger had a huge weight of almost 76 tons. The large cannon and heavy armour whilst effective, could not outweigh the poor manoeuvrability and low speeds of the vehicle in battle. The significant weight affected its reliability, and production volumes were also limited. However, the Jagdtiger  for its offensive capacity alone, ranks as the high point of German production of self-propelled tank destroyers during World War 2.
